Albendazole was developed by SmithKline Beecham (the predecessor of GlaxoSmithKline). It is a broad-spectrum thiabendazole type anthelmintic drug that can be used both for human and veterinary purposes. It can inhibit the growth and reproduction of parasites by suppressing the proteins in the intestinal tract or absorption cells of the parasites, thereby preventing the parasites from obtaining the necessary sugar for survival, causing depletion of endogenous glycogen in the parasites and inhibiting the fumarase reduction enzyme system to prevent the production of adenosine triphosphate, making it impossible for the parasites to survive and reproduce. Eventually, the parasites die gradually due to energy depletion. Albendazole has the ability to completely kill hookworm eggs and whipworm eggs and partially kill roundworm eggs. It can also kill and expel various nematodes that parasitize animals. In addition, it has obvious killing and expulsion effects on tapeworms and cysticerci. It is suitable for treating echinococcosis (echinococcosis) and neurological infections caused by tapeworms in pork (cysticercosis), as well as treating hookworm, roundworm, pinworm, trichinellosis, tapeworm, whipworm and fecal roundworm diseases.
Albendazole is an effective and broad-spectrum deworming drug. It can block the absorption of various nutrients and glucose by the parasites, causing depletion of the parasites' glycogen and preventing them from surviving and reproducing. It is used to treat single or mixed infections caused by roundworms, pinworms, whipworms, hookworms, etc.
It binds to tubulin and inhibits the polymerization of microtubules.
This product is a new highly effective and broad-spectrum deworming drug. It has significant efficacy against liver flukes, tapeworms, lung and gastrointestinal nematodes. It is the most potent among benzimidazole drugs and is currently the preferred drug for preventing and treating parasitic diseases in livestock. This product is effective against adult and larval liver flukes and large flukes of cattle and sheep, with a reduction rate of up to 90-100%. In recent years, it has been found that this product also has a strong effect on bovine cysticercosis, with the number of cysticerci reduced and the lesions disappearing after treatment. In addition, this product can also be used to prevent parasitic infections, thus achieving good results in promoting the growth of sheep and increasing wool production. 4. It is used for the prevention and treatment of cabbage powdery mildew, rice blast disease, tobacco powdery mildew, anthracnose, etc.
The possible side effects of taking albendazole are: nausea, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, fatigue, chills, stomach discomfort, mild abdominal pain, loss of appetite, etc.
These symptoms usually occur 2-3 days after taking the medication.
In mild cases, they disappear within a few hours.
Dizziness and fatigue can last for 2-3 days. The incidence rate is 6-14.9%.
When treating ascariasis, 2% of cases experience the reaction of vomiting roundworms.
When treating cysticercosis, especially cerebral cysticercosis, it is mainly related to the release of heterologous proteins by the death of cysticerci, which occurs more than 2-7 days after taking the medication.
Symptoms include headache (53.7%), low fever (22.7%), rash, muscle pain, visual impairment (4.3%), and epileptic seizure (13.3%).
Appropriate measures (such as using adrenal cortex hormones, reducing intracranial pressure, and anti-epileptic treatment) should be taken.
There have been reports of death due to brain herniation during treatment in China.
For treating cysticercosis and echinococcosis, due to the large dosage of medication and long treatment course, elevated alanine aminotransferase may occur, which usually returns to normal gradually after discontinuation of the medication.
