Molecules and physicochemical properties
Molecular formula: C₃₈H₇₂N₂O₁₂
Molecular weight: 748.98
Appearance: White or off-white crystalline powder, odorless, bitter in taste, slightly hygroscopic.
Solubility: Almost insoluble in water, readily soluble in methanol, acetone, anhydrous ethanol and dilute hydrochloric acid.
Melting and boiling points: Melting point 113-115°C, boiling point 822.1°C (760 mmHg).
Specific rotation: -45° to -49° (20mg/ml anhydrous ethanol solution).
Quality standard
Purity requirement: For pharmaceutical grade, calculated as anhydrous matter, it should reach 96.0% - 102.0%.
Heavy metal limit: Some suppliers (such as Qiaofeng Chemical) require it to be ≤1ppm.
Mechanism of action
By binding to the 50S ribosome subunit of bacteria, it inhibits protein synthesis and blocks bacterial growth.
Antibacterial spectrum and indications
Gram-positive bacteria: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus.
Gram-negative bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis.
Atypical pathogens: Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia (the preferred drug for mycoplasma pneumonia in children).
Main uses: Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), reproductive and urinary tract infections (chlamydia urethritis), skin and soft tissue infections.
Pharmacokinetic characteristics
The oral bioavailability is 37%, with a half-life of 35 to 48 hours, and the tissue concentration can reach 10 to 100 times that of blood.
50% is excreted through the biliary tract, and 4.5% is excreted through urine.
Toxicity Warning
Hazard category code 42/43 (potentially allergenic). Protective equipment (S22, S36/37) must be worn during operation.
The FDA warns: It may pose a risk of heart disease. People with a history of arrhythmia should use it with caution.
Contraindications: This product is contraindicated in patients allergic to azithromycin and those with severe liver dysfunction.
Drug interactions
When used in combination with warfarin, it may prolong the coagulation time, and when used in combination with ergol derivatives, it increases the risk of poisoning
