Basic information
Molecular formula: C₈H₁₄O₂, molecular weight 142.19 g/mol.
Appearance: Colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a faint ester-like odor.
Key physical properties:
Melting point: -75°C
Boiling point: 160-165°C (at normal pressure)
Density: 0.893-0.898 g/cm³ (20°C)
Flash point: 50°C (Closed cup, flammable liquid)
Refractive index: n²⁰/D = 1.422-1.424
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water (3 g/L, 20°C), readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether and benzene.
Stability: At room temperature, polymerization inhibitors (such as methyl hydroquinone, 10-20 ppm) need to be added to prevent polymerization. Reacts vigorously with strong oxidants, strong acids/bases.
Butyl methacrylate (BMA), as a multifunctional acrylate monomer, is indispensable in high-end materials (bulletproof glass, biomedical) and industrial auxiliaries.
1.Polymer and material synthesis
Acrylic acid copolymer monomer
Coatings and adhesives: They endow coatings with flexibility, weather resistance and adhesion, and are used in automotive paints and building waterproof coatings.
Transparent material: Preparation of polybutyl methacrylate (PMB), used in bulletproof glass interlayers (aircraft/automotive safety glass) and optical devices.
Industrial additives
Textile/Leather treatment: As a polish and anti-wrinkle finishing agent, it enhances wear resistance.
Oil additives: Improve the low-temperature fluidity and anti-wear performance of lubricating oil.
2. Functional chemicals
Medicine and Biomaterials
Drug sustained-release carriers, contact lens materials (with excellent biocompatibility).
Environmental protection application
Synthesis of water-based acrylic emulsion, reducing VOC emissions (cost and environmental performance need to be balanced).
Health and environmental risks
Toxicity: Low toxicity (oral LD₅₀ = 11990 mg/kg in rats), but the vapor irritates the eyes/respiratory tract and sensitizes skin contact (R43).
Explosion risk: Flash point 50°C, explosion limit 2-8% (by volume). Strict fire prevention is required.
Operation and Storage
Protective requirements: Chemical protective gloves, goggles, gas masks, and forced ventilation in the operation room.
Storage conditions: Keep away from light and sealed, below 30°C, with polymerization inhibitors added (shelf life: 3 months).
Transport marking: UN 2227, packaging category III, with "Flammable Liquid" label affixed.
