Molecules and physicochemical parameters
Molecular formula: C₂H₆OS
Molecular weight: 78.13
Appearance: Colorless, transparent, viscous liquid with a slightly bitter or sulfurous smell.
Melting and boiling points: Melting point 18.45℃, boiling point 189℃ (normal pressure).
Solubility
It is miscible with water, ethanol, acetone, etc.
Insoluble in petroleum ether and aliphatic hydrocarbons (except acetylene).
Other features
Density: 100 g/mL (at 20℃)
Flash point: 95℃ (open cup), ignition point: 300-302℃.
Strong hygroscopicity (can absorb 70% of its own weight in moisture at 20℃).
Chemical properties
Stability
Stable in alkaline environments, it decomposes when heated in acidic conditions (generating formaldehyde, methyl mercaptan, etc.).
Incompatible substances: acyl chlorides, halogens, strong oxidants (such as nitric acid) - may cause explosion.
Reactivity
It can be oxidized to dimethyl sulfoxide and reduced to dimethyl sulfide.
It reacts with potassium iodide to form methyl iodide (for analytical chemistry applications).
1. Industrial and chemical synthesis
Solvent and reaction medium:
Aromatics extraction (selective separation of aromatics and alkanes)
Acrylonitrile polymerization, polyurethane synthesis (to increase reaction rate).
Functional additives
Antifreeze (freezing point of 40% aqueous solution -60℃)
Electronics industry: electrolytes for liquid crystal displays, capacitive dielectrics.
2. Medicine and Biotechnology
Drug carrier
Enhance skin permeability (such as local painkillers, anti-inflammatory preparations);
Biological sample protection
Cell cryopreservation (reducing ice crystal damage and protecting stem cell activity);
Therapeutic application
Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant (eliminating free radicals);
Protection against radiation mucositis (Stomatology)
3. Agriculture and Pesticides
Pesticide enhancer
Enhance the penetration of insecticides/herbicides within plants;
Plant growth regulation
When used in combination with formaldehyde, it enhances the efficacy of fumigation and sterilization.
Health risk
Irritation: Redness, swelling and dermatitis may occur upon contact with the skin or eyes. Inhalation of vapor causes respiratory tract inflammation;
Osmotoxicity: Promotes the transdermal absorption of other toxins (such as pesticides and heavy metals).
Operation protection
Essential equipment
Gas masks (half masks), chemical protective glasses, nitrile gloves;
Environmental control
Operate the fume hood and avoid open flames and static electricity (flash point 95℃).
Leakage and emergency response
Minor leakage: After adsorption of sand and soil, it should be disposed of as hazardous waste.
In case of large-scale leakage: Build embankments and cover with foam to prevent evaporation.
Storage requirements
Sealed, light-proof, cool and well-ventilated (≤25℃);
Store independently, away from acids, halides and oxidants.
