Physical properties
Appearance: Colorless to pale yellow liquid (industrial grade may be yellow), color darkens when exposed to light or left for a long time.
Melting point: -13°C, Boiling point: 114°C (75 mmHg).
Density: 1.337 g/mL (25°C), refractive index: 1.452 (20°C).
Solubility
Readily soluble in water (decomposes upon contact with water), methanol, ethanol and acetonitrile;
Insoluble in non-polar solvents such as acetone and chloroform.
Chemical properties
Strong electrophilicity: As a sulfonyl chloride reagent, it readily reacts with nucleophilic groups such as amines and alcohols to form sulfonamides or sulfonate esters.
Hydrolytic sensitive: It rapidly decomposes into dimethylaminosulfonic acid and HCl upon contact with water, and strict moisture protection is required.
Pharmaceutical synthesis: Key intermediates (such as the diuretic drug diuricide and the analgesic drug Qiangtongding), sulfonyl groups are introduced to enhance drug activity
Pesticide manufacturing: Synthesis of insecticides/herbicides, construction of sulfur-containing active structures
Chemical materials: Dye modification, plastic additives, to enhance the weather resistance and functionality of materials
Organic synthesis: Preparation of sulfonamide compounds (such as 2-ethyl-1, 3-cyclopentadione), core reagents for nucleophilic substitution reactions
Hazard category:
Corrosiveness (R34) : Causes skin burns;
Carcinogenicity (R45) : Long-term exposure may cause cancer;
Inhalation toxicity (R26) : Extremely toxic.
Protective measures:
When operating, a gas mask, acid and alkali resistant gloves and goggles should be worn.
In case of leakage, cover with plastic sheeting and collect to avoid contact with water (which releases heat and HCl).
Storage conditions:
Keep sealed and away from light. Store in a dry place at ≤25°C, away from oxidants and water.
