Ethyl cellulose is almost insoluble in water, glycerol and propylene glycol. However, it is soluble to varying degrees in certain organic solvents (depending on the ethoxy content). Solvents with an ethoxy content of less than 46% to 48% are easily soluble in tetrahydrofuran, methyl acetate, chloroform and an ethanol-aromatic hydrocarbon mixture (1:1, W/W); those with an ethoxy content greater than the above, are easily soluble in ethanol, methanol, toluene, chloroform and ethyl acetate (as determined by the OT-42 method). Take 5g of the sample, dissolve it in a 95g mixture of toluene and ethanol (80:20, W/W), and the solution should be stable and transparent, with a slight yellow color. Take several milliliters of this solution and transfer it onto a test tube or glass plate. Let it evaporate, and turbidity, thickening, and eventually a transparent film as the residue will occur successively. This film is flammable.
Tablets (mostly used for vitamins and inorganic salts); binder for vitamin powder; filler; colorants and other food additives; diluent
Used as adhesive and wire paint
Used in the fields of ink, coatings, adhesives, medicine, cosmetics and food, also as fillers, adhesives, etc.
Ethyl cellulose is widely used in paints. It can also be used as the basic material for solid lubricants in the stamping of metal workpieces. In micro-circuit printing, ethyl cellulose is used as a color carrier. In the radio industry, it is used as a high-grade insulating material, and as a special film in protective coatings, such as the coating layer for rocket launch propellants. It can be used as a thermosetting adhesive and coating for cables, paper, textiles, etc., as an insulator for extruded wires, and as a toughness enhancer for plastics. It can also be used as a base material for pigment grinding, for printing inks, for molded plastic powders, for explosive fuses, and in vitamin formulations, etc. It can be used as a peelable protective layer for preventing corrosion and damage of metal parts before use, and as a peelable coating for protecting fragile glassware. In adhesives, textiles and fibers, medicine and food, and other industries, it has many other uses. Industrial-grade ethyl cellulose is used in paints (gel-type paints, thermosetting paints), inks (screen printing inks, photoengraving brush inks), adhesives, pigment pastes, etc. High-quality products are used in medicine, cosmetics and food, such as packaging materials for drug tablets, adhesives for long-lasting preparations, etc.
