Furfural is a colorless and transparent oily liquid formed by the hydrolysis and dehydration of pentosan in plant fiber raw materials. It is also known as furan甲醛 and has a special fragrance. Its color changes rapidly to yellowish-brown under light, heat, air oxidation and the action of inorganic acids, eventually turning black-brown. It is also prone to polymerization and assumes a resinous state. During storage, it should be protected from light, deoxygenated and sealed. Furfural is partially miscible with water and also soluble in alcohols, ether, acetic acid and other solvents. It has a strong ability to dissolve aromatic hydrocarbons, alkenes, polar substances and certain high molecular compounds, but has a weak ability to dissolve saturated substances such as aliphatic hydrocarbons and higher fatty acids. Chemicalbook can generate various derivatives through reactions such as oxidation, hydrogenation, nitration, oxidation, decarbonylation, condensation, etc. It is very similar in properties to benzaldehyde and can undergo anisidine reaction, Purkinje reaction and Coniacharo reaction. Furfural reacts with aniline and acetic acid solution to show a bright red color, and the latter is often used as a qualitative reagent for furfural. Quantitative analysis is based on the two properties of aldehyde groups and furan rings, and besides chromatography, there are volumetric methods (hydroxylamine hydrochloride method, tetra bromide method, etc.) and gravimetric methods (indophenol method, barbital acid method, etc.) for product analysis. In China, the hydroxylamine hydrochloride method is used for product analysis.
Mainly used as an industrial solvent, it is employed for the production of furfuryl alcohol, furfural, tetrahydrofuran, γ-pyrrolidone, pyrrole, and tetrahydropyrrole, etc.
Used as an analytical reagent
It is used as a raw material for organic synthesis, and also for the production of resins, varnishes, pesticides, medicines, rubber and paints, etc.
It is used for tanning leather. It should be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse, protected from light, and kept away from direct sunlight and fire sources.
Furfural is a raw material for the production of many drugs and industrial products. Through electrolysis reduction, furan can also be converted into dimethylglyoxime, which is the raw material for producing the drug atropine. Some derivatives of furfural have strong bactericidal ability and a wide range of inhibitory spectra. For example, furfural, through 5-nitrofurfural, can be condensed with hydrochloric acid aminourea to obtain furacillin, which is a disinfectant and preservative. Furfural is the raw material for intermediates such as furanacetic acid, furanamine adipic acid, adipic acid, furanol, etc., and is widely used in the synthesis of fine chemicals such as medicines, pesticides, veterinary drugs, dyes, fragrances, rubber additives, preservatives, etc. The field with the largest consumption of furfural is as a solvent and raw material for synthetic resins. In the production of synthetic resins, furfural resin, chemical book furfural resin and furanone resin, etc. can be produced. Furfural resin is also called furanol resin. Furfural is hydrogenated under high pressure to generate furanol, and furanol is polymerized to obtain furanol resin. This resin has strong alkali resistance, high heat resistance and water resistance, and can be used as filling resin cement, anti-corrosion lining, adhesive. Furfural can be selectively extracted from petroleum and vegetable oil to extract the unsaturated components. Furfural can extract the aromatic components from lubricating oil and diesel to improve their quality. In the production of synthetic rubber, furfural is used to extract and purify butadiene and isoprene. Furfural can stimulate the skin and mucous membranes. The maximum allowable concentration in the air is 5 ppm. The oral LD50 of rats is 127 mg/kg.
GB 2760—96 classifies it as a permitted food-grade flavoring agent and extraction solvent. It is mainly used for preparing various heat-processing flavorings, such as bread, cream hard candies, coffee, etc.
Furfural is an important organic chemical raw material. It can be used to produce succinic anhydride, oxalic acid, furanol, tetrahydrofuran, and can also be used to synthesize furfural resin, furan resin, rubber vulcanization accelerator, rubber-plastic anti-aging agent, preservatives, etc. It is mainly used in the pharmaceutical, pesticide, veterinary drug and food industries.
