Glyoxal is an organic compound with the chemical formula OCHCHO, consisting of two aldehyde groups - C=O-H connected together. It is the simplest di-aldehyde and is a yellow liquid at room temperature.
Usually, glyoxal is sold in the form of a 40% solution. It is similar to other small molecule aldehydes and can form hydrates. The hydrates then condense to form a series of "oligomers", whose structures are still unclear. Currently, at least the following two hydrates are available for sale: the dimer glyoxal chemical book hydrate: [(CHO)2]2[H2O]2, trans-2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-dioxane; the trimer glyoxal hydrate: [(CHO)2]3(H2O)4 (CAS#4405-13-4).
Glyoxal can be used as a post-treatment agent for viscose fibers, an insoluble adhesive for polyvinyl alcohol, starch, etc., as well as a raw material for paints, dyes and medicines; it can also be used as a pharmaceutical intermediate, a fabric finishing agent and a dye intermediate.
Glyoxal is the raw material for preparing imidazole. Imidazole is an intermediate for fungicides such as Imazalil and Imazamox. Besides, glyoxal is mainly used in the fields of medicine, textiles, building materials, papermaking, daily chemical products, coatings and bonding materials, and can also be used as a dye intermediate.
Glyoxal is mainly used in the textile industry. As a fiber treatment agent, it can enhance the shrinkage and wrinkle resistance of fibers such as cotton and nylon, and is a durable heat setting agent. In Japan, this application accounts for 80% of the total consumption of glyoxal. Glycol is an insoluble adhesive for gelatin, animal glue, cheese, polyvinyl alcohol and starch, etc. Glyoxal is also used in the leather industry and for making waterproof matches. Glyoxal is a raw material for organic synthesis. By heating and condensing glyoxal with urea and formaldehyde in the presence of sodium carbonate, a 2D-resin is obtained, which is used as a fabric finishing agent; Chemicalbook When glyoxal reacts with formaldehyde and ammonium sulfate, imidazole is cyclically synthesized, and then imidazole-based antifungal drugs such as clotrimazole and miconazole are synthesized; Glyoxal forms a cycloaddition with para-phenylenediamine to obtain benzopyrazine: it is an intermediate of the anti-tuberculosis drug pyrazinamide. Hydroxyphenylacetic acid produced by glyoxal has been used in industrial production in Japan as an intermediate for antibiotics and vitamin A series products. Glyoxal is also used in the synthesis of berberine hydrochloride and sulfonamide drugs such as sulfamethoxypyrazine. It is also used in insecticides, deodorants, embalming agents for corpses, and sand mold hardeners.
Gelatin, animal glue, cheese and other insoluble adhesives, artificial silk shrinkage inhibitors, organic synthesis. Mainly used in medicine, textiles, building materials, papermaking, daily chemical products, coatings and bonding materials, etc.
