What is Glyoxylic acid CAS 298-12-4?
Glyoxylic acid (also known as formylformic acid, hydrated glyoxylic acid, or oxygenated acetic acid) has the chemical formula C2H203 and is the simplest aldehyde acid. It is found in unripe fruits, tender leaves, and sugar beet. The crystalline form obtained from water is monoclinic crystal (containing 1/2 crystallized water). Its relative molecular mass is 70.04. The melting point is 98℃. It has an unpleasant smell and is a strong corrosive acid. It readily deliquesces and can form a paste when exposed to air. It is slightly soluble in ethanol, ether, and benzene, and can be freely dissolved in water. The aqueous solution is stable and does not deteriorate in air. It exists in the form of hydration in the aqueous solution. It can react with most metals except stainless steel. It has both acidic and aldehyde properties. It can add with sodium bisulfite or hydrogen cyanide, react with hydroxylamine or benzhydrazide to form oximes or hydrazones, undergo the argentation reaction, and can also form carboxylates and esters, etc.

Acetaldehyde acid is the simplest ketonic acid (aldehyde acid), possessing both acidic and aldehyde properties. It is used as a raw material for varnishes, a component in perfumes, medicines, dyes, plastics and household chemicals. It can be used to produce oral penicillin flavoring, ethyl vanillin and allantoin (see 01320). Allantoin is an anti-ulcer drug and also an intermediate in some pharmaceutical products and daily chemical products. Further processing can result in highly efficient liquid fertilizers.
