Molecular formula and structure
Molecular formula: C₆H₆O₂
Molecular weight: 110.11 g/mol
Structure: The benzene ring is para-dihydroxyl substituted (1, 4-dihydroxybenzene), belonging to polyphenolic compounds.
Appearance: White needle-like crystals or powder, oxidized to yellowish-brown upon exposure to light, with a faint phenolic odor. Should be stored away from light.
Chemical properties:
Strong reducing property: It is easily oxidized to p-benzoquinone and is used as the core mechanism of a developer.
Polymerization inhibition function: Capture free radicals and inhibit the polymerization of olefin monomers (addition amount 200 ppm).
Stability: Reacts vigorously with strong oxidants (such as peroxides), and forms dark oxides when encountering alkali.
Polymer material additives
Polymerization inhibitors: Prevent pre-polymerization of monomers such as acrylate and styrene during storage and transportation (global annual demand exceeds 80,000 tons).
Antioxidants: Rubber anti-aging agents (delaying vulcanization oxidation), gasoline stabilizers (inhibiting gum formation).
2. Imaging and dye Industry
Black and white developer: Reduces silver halide to metallic silver to form an image (photographic grade purity ≥99.5%).
Dye synthesis: Manufacturing anthraquinone dyes (such as disperse blue) and azo dye intermediates, accounting for 30% of the demand for dye raw materials.
3. Water treatment and anti-corrosion
Boiler deoxidizer: Removes dissolved oxygen in closed-loop circulation systems, with a corrosion inhibition rate of over 90%.
Detergent additive: As a corrosion inhibitor and antioxidant component, it extends the shelf life of products.
4. Other functional applications
Analytical Chemistry: Photometric determination of elements such as phosphorus, magnesium and copper; Heteropoly acid reducing agent.
Cosmetics: Hair dye ingredients (concentration should be controlled < 2%, restricted by the European Union).
Toxicity data
Acute oral LD₅₀ : 320 mg/kg in rats (highly toxic), accidental ingestion of 1g in adults can cause headache and vomiting, and 5g can be fatal.
Carcinogenicity: WHO IARC Group 3 carcinogen (limited evidence of carcinogenicity to humans).
Environmental risk: For fish, LC₅₀ = 36.7 mg/L (blackhead fish), discharge into water bodies is prohibited.
Operation and Storage
Protection: Wear nitrile gloves, gas masks and goggles to avoid direct skin contact.
Storage: Sealed and protected from light, temperature < 30℃, relative humidity < 60%, keep away from oxidants and heat sources.
Fire extinguishing agents: mist water, dry powder, carbon dioxide (do not use direct running water to prevent vapor diffusion).
Exposure limit
Workplace permitted concentration: TWA 2 mg/m³ (ACGIH/NIOSH standard).
