The core value of aluminum distearate lies in its role as an efficient thickener/thixotropic agent, suspension stabilizer, lubricant and waterproofing agent for oily systems. Its greatest application highlight is that it is used as a key thickener for complex aluminum-based greases in the field of greases, giving greases excellent water resistance and high temperature performance. In coatings and inks, it is a classic anti-settling thickening thixotropic agent. In cosmetic ointments and anhydrous products, it provides the required consistency and suspension stability. Its hydrophobicity and lubricity also play a role in plastic, rubber processing and waterproof materials. When selecting and using it, special attention should be paid to its oil solubility and the need for heating activation.
1. Lubricating grease industry (core application):
Grease thickener/structural stabilizer: This is its most important application. Aluminum distearate is a key component in the manufacture of composite aluminum-based grease.
It is compounded with fatty acid aluminum soap (such as aluminum monostearate) or other components to form a stable soap fiber structure in the base oil (such as mineral oil, synthetic oil), giving the grease the required consistency, mechanical stability and water resistance.
The prepared composite aluminum-based grease has excellent water resistance, good pumpability, high dropping point (high temperature resistance), colloidal stability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used in steel mill roller bearings, water pumps, ship machinery, papermaking machinery and other humid, high temperature or good sealing conditions.
2. Coatings, inks and pigments industry:
Anti-settling agent/suspending agent: In solvent-based coatings and inks, it prevents pigments (such as titanium dioxide, carbon black) and fillers from settling and agglomerating during storage, and keeps the system uniform and stable.
Thickener/thixotropic agent:
Increase the viscosity of coatings and inks and give them thixotropy: During construction (brushing, spraying), the viscosity is reduced by shear force, which is convenient for leveling; after construction, the viscosity is restored to prevent sagging and dripping, which is particularly suitable for vertical surface construction and thick paste coatings.
Improve the printing suitability of inks (transferability, anti-splashing).
Matting agent/flatting agent (auxiliary effect): By controlling the gel structure to affect the light scattering on the surface of the paint film, it can help reduce the gloss to a certain extent.
Drying agent (secondary effect): In some oxidative drying systems such as air-drying alkyd resin paints, aluminum ions can be used as an auxiliary drying agent (mainly as a coordination drying agent), and cooperate with the main drying agent (cobalt, manganese) to promote the oxidative cross-linking drying process of the paint film, especially contributing to the drying of the bottom layer. But it is usually not used as a main drying agent.
Waterproofing agent: Enhance the water resistance and anti-permeability of the coating film.
3. Cosmetics and personal care products:
Thickener/suspending agent: Mainly used in anhydrous or oil-based systems (such as ointments, vaseline-based products, anhydrous antiperspirants, makeup (mascara, eyeliner, lipstick), sunscreen, massage oil) to increase viscosity, improve texture, and suspend insoluble particles (such as pigments, pearlescent powder, sunscreen).
Emulsifier stabilizer (secondary function): In W/O (water-in-oil) emulsions, it can help stabilize the emulsion structure.
Opaquer/pearlizer (specific products): It can produce pearlescent or milky effects in specific formulas.
Waterproof/antiperspirant: Used in products such as antiperspirant sticks to enhance film formation and durability on the skin.
4. Plastics and rubber industry:
Lubricant/release agent: Used as an internal or external lubricant in the processing of plastics (such as PVC, polyolefins) to reduce the friction between the melt and the equipment, improve fluidity, prevent sticking to the roller and mold, and facilitate demolding.
Stabilizer component (secondary role): In some PVC formulations, it can be used as an auxiliary heat stabilizer (capture HCl), but its performance is not as good as that of primary stabilizers such as lead salts, calcium zinc, etc.
Waterproofing agent: Added to rubber or plastic products to improve their waterproof properties.
5. Building materials industry:
Waterproofing additives: Added to cement mortar, concrete, gypsum products, asphalt waterproofing membranes to improve their hydrophobicity and impermeability
Toxicity: Low toxicity, but irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory system. It will produce harmful products such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide when burned.
