2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is a multifunctional active monomer:
Wide application: Spanning three major fields including high-end coatings, medical materials, and the electronics industry, it is particularly irreplaceable in contact lenses and car paint.
High reactivity: It contains both vinyl and hydroxyl groups, and is easily involved in cross-linking and esterification reactions.
Operational sensitivity: It is necessary to strictly avoid light and refrigerate, and add polymerization inhibitors to prevent polymerization failure.
Synthesis of Polymer materials
Coating and resin modification: Copolymerize with acrylic monomers to form resins containing active hydroxyl groups, enhancing weather resistance and gloss (such as high-end car paint).
Medical materials: For manufacturing contact lenses and orthopedic fillers, due to its excellent biocompatibility.
Industrial additives
Adhesive: Used for textile adhesives and modification of non-woven fabrics.
Electronics and grease industry: dehydrating agents for electron microscopes, lubricating oil additives.
Functional monomer:
Uv-curing system: As a crosslinking monomer for radiation-cured coatings and inks.
Toxicity data:
Oral LD₅₀ in rats: 5050 mg/kg (low toxicity); Abdominal LD₅₀ of mice: 497 mg/kg.
Irritation: Contact with skin or eyes can cause burns (R34) and allergies (R43).
Protective measures:
When operating, wear anti-corrosion gloves, goggles and a gas mask, and carry out the operation in a fume hood.
Storage conditions:
Store in a refrigerator away from light (2-8 ℃), sealed and kept in an inert gas environment.
