What is Magnesium sulfate CAS 7487-88-9?

Magnesium sulfate is also known as sulfuric acid, bitter salt, diuretic salt, or diuretic powder. It is a compound containing magnesium. Its appearance is colorless or white, easily weathering crystals or white powder. It has no odor. It has a bitter-salty taste. It is hygroscopic. Magnesium sulfate heptahydrate loses six molecules of crystalline water at 150℃ and loses all crystalline water at 200℃. The anhydrous form has a density of 2.66, a melting point of 1124℃, and decomposes simultaneously. It is soluble in water and can be dissolved in alcohols, ether, and glycerol, but is insoluble in acetone. Magnesium sulfate is a commonly used chemical reagent and drying agent. Magnesium sulfate wet compress has anti-inflammatory and de-swelling effects. It can alleviate local tissue damage. Magnesium sulfate wet compress combined with plastic wrap wrapping is one of the effective methods for treating chemotherapy-induced phlebitis. It is used in medicine as a laxative, as it can increase intestinal osmotic pressure, retain a large amount of water in the intestines, increase volume, and thereby stimulate intestinal mucosa and promote defecation. It is used for constipation, elimination of intestinal toxins, and with anthelmintic drugs. It is also used in gallstone diseases. It is also used in the leather industry, explosives, fertilizers, papermaking, ceramics, printing and dyeing, etc. It is naturally produced. It can be obtained by reacting sulfuric acid with magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, or magnesium carbonate.

Magnesium sulfate CAS 7487-88-9 Use

Fetal preservation drugs

Magnesium sulfate is a commonly used fetal preservation drug in obstetrics for preventing premature birth. It can help prolong the labor process by at least 48 hours. Magnesium is the second most important cation in human cells and is a cofactor for many enzymes, playing a significant role in muscle contraction, nerve conduction, etc. Magnesium ions can inhibit the activity of the central nervous system, inhibit the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, block the conduction at the nerve-muscle junction, reduce or relieve muscle contraction, and have a relaxing effect on vascular smooth muscle, causing dilated peripheral blood vessels and lowering blood pressure. Therefore, it has preventive and therapeutic effects on eclampsia and inhibits uterine smooth muscle contraction. It can be used to treat premature birth. The dosage for fetal preservation is similar to that of treating gestational hypertension. The initial loading dose is 4g; 100-250ml of 5% glucose injection is slowly intravenously dripped within 30-60 minutes, then 20-40ml of 25% magnesium sulfate injection is added to 500ml of 5% glucose injection for intravenous drip at a speed of 1-2g per hour until uterine contractions stop.

Fertilizer Usage

Magnesium sulfate is used as a fertilizer in agriculture because magnesium is one of the main components of chlorophyll. It is commonly applied to potted plants or crops deficient in magnesium, such as tomatoes, potatoes, roses, peppers, and hemp, etc. The advantage of applying magnesium sulfate over other magnesium soil amendments (such as calcareous limestone) is that it has a higher solubility compared to other fertilizers.

Feed application

Feed-grade magnesium sulfate serves as a supplement of magnesium in the process of feed processing. Magnesium is an indispensable factor in the bone formation process and muscle contraction within livestock and poultry bodies. It is also an activator of various enzymes in the bodies of livestock and poultry, playing an extremely important role in the metabolism of substances and the nervous function of livestock and poultry. If the body of livestock and poultry lacks magnesium, it will lead to disorders in substance metabolism and nervous function, imbalance in supply, affecting the growth and development of livestock and poultry, and even causing death.
