Polyacrylonitrile is a polymer of acrylonitrile formed by copolymerization of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate, and itaconic acid. It is the raw material for acrylonitrile fibers (commonly known as artificial wool). Its chemical formula is [CH2=CH-CN]n, with an average molecular weight ranging from 2.5×104 to 8×104. At room temperature, it is a white powder with a specific gravity of 1.14 to 1.16. The softening point is 267℃, and the decomposition temperature is 230℃. It is almost insoluble in water, fats, weak acids, weak bases, and common solvents, nor is it soluble in body fluids such as saliva and gastric juice. However, it can be dissolved in polar organic solvents such as dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and N-alkyl sulfoxide, as well as concentrated aqueous solutions of inorganic salts (such as sodium thiocyanate NaSCN, perchlorate, zinc chloride ZnCl2, etc.) and nitric acid. It is suitable for the production of fibrous polyacrylonitrile. The molecular weight of polyacrylonitrile is between 2,050,000 and 2,080,000, and it softens and decomposes at 230℃. Polyacrylonitrile is a low-toxic polymer. The oral acute poisoning dose for rats is 2,000 to 3,000 mg/kg, and the inhalation concentration is 2,500 to 25,000 mg/m3. Neither causes poisoning. It is accumulative. Polyacrylonitrile fibers are relatively thick, hard, brittle, and prone to breaking, similar to glass fibers. They can cause mechanical irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. Therefore, workers in the spinning process who come into contact with polyacrylonitrile fibers may experience skin itching and rashes. The skin patch test did not detect chemical irritation or sensitization. Preventive measures: Reform the process to reduce the generation of low polymer dust, use closed and exhaust-type ventilation, and strengthen personal protection. Supply foods rich in iodine and vitamin C.
It can be used as gasket packing, and after being woven, it can be used to make fireproof clothing and processed into carbon fiber.
