Polypropylene glycol is a polymer with the molecular formula H(C3H6O)nOH. It is a colorless to pale yellow viscous liquid. It is non-volatile. It is non-corrosive. The molecular weight of common commercial products ranges from 400 to 2050. Lower molecular weight polymers can dissolve in water. Higher molecular weight polymers are only slightly soluble in water and can be dissolved in oils, many hydrocarbons, aliphatic alcohols, ketones, esters, etc. The hydroxyl groups at both ends of the molecule can esterify to form monoesters or diesters. The monoesters are non-ionic surfactants and can react with alcohols to form ethers. It is a solvent for vegetable oils, resins and paraffin wax, and is also used in the preparation of alkyd resins, emulsifiers, anti-emulsifiers, lubricants and plasticizers, etc. It is obtained by condensation of propylene oxide and propylene glycol under high pressure or in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
Polypropylene glycol can be used as a defoamer; it is also a solvent for vegetable oils, waxes and resins. It is used in eucalyptus sugar, beverages, candies, yeast, etc.
Toxicity
LD50 > 10g/kg (mouse, oral). No abnormalities were found in mutagenicity tests, Ames test, mouse bone marrow micronucleus test, and mouse sperm aberration test.
