Twain 20 is a surfactant, a yellow or amber clear oily liquid with a distinctive odor and a mild bitter taste. It is usually used as a stabilizer in the production process or final formulation of biological products. It is obtained by the reaction of lauric acid glycerol monoester with ethylene oxide.
Solubility Dissolves in water, ethanol, methanol, ethyl acetate and dihexane; insoluble in mineral oil and petroleum ether. Measured according to the OT-42 method. For the fatty acid test, take 5% sample solution of 5 ml, add 5 ml of sodium hydroxide solution (TS-224). Boil for several minutes, cool down, and acidify with dilute hydrochloric acid solution (TS-117). Due to the release of fatty acids, the solution becomes a strong milky white. The same as the identification method 3 in "Polyoxyethylene (8) Stearate (10021)". After alkaline saponification of 100g of Tween 20 sample, approximately 16g of fatty acid and 8g of polyol can be produced. The determination method is shown in "Polyoxyethylene (8) Stearate (10021)".
The appearance is a translucent amber liquid with a slight peculiar odor and a slightly bitter taste. Its relative density ranges from 1.08 to 1.13, and its boiling point is 321℃. It is soluble in water, ethanol, methanol and ethyl acetate, but insoluble in mineral oil and petroleum ether (Chemicalbook). The HLB value is 16.7. The oral LD50 for rats is 37g/kg, and Ad for 10-25mg/kg (FAO/WHO, 1994). Tween 20 is a non-ionic surfactant.
As an O/W type food emulsifier, it can be used alone or in combination with Span-60, Span-65, and Span-80. In China, it is permitted for use in ice cream, with a maximum usage amount of 1.5g/kg; in fruit beverages, the maximum usage amount is 0.75g/kg; and in mooncakes, the maximum usage amount is 0.5g/kg.
Tween 20 is an oil-in-water emulsifier. It can be used as an emulsifier, diffusion agent, stabilizer, lubricant and antistatic agent. In petroleum extraction, it is used as a wax inhibitor for oil well production, which can remove wax deposits from oil wells; as a demulsifier, it can reduce the viscosity of crude oil, increase oil well production and improve transportation capacity. In the fields of medicine and daily chemical products, it is used as an emulsifier, penetration agent and dispersant for drugs and cosmetics. Due to its rust prevention and lubricating properties, it is used to prepare rust-proof lubricants and rust-removing and grease-removing oils.
