Povidone-iodine is an unstable complex formed by the combination of surfactants and iodine. It belongs to the iodophor type of topical disinfectants. At room temperature, it is a yellow-brown to red-brown amorphous powder that is soluble in water or ethanol but insoluble in ether or chloroform. The 1-ethylene-2-pyridinone homopolymer in it is the surfactant, which helps the solution to wet and penetrate objects, thereby enhancing the bactericidal effect of iodine. About 80-90% of the bound iodine can depolymerize into free iodine, which is highly concentrated and has strong bactericidal power, without odor, irritation, or sensitization, and has low toxicity. It is a broad-spectrum bactericide that can kill viruses, bacteria, spores, fungi, and protozoa. At a concentration of 15 ppm, it can kill the reproductive forms of various bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) within one minute, kill tuberculosis bacilli within a longer period of time, and kill fungi (Bacillus subtilis) within 1.5 hours. Killing black variant spores and wax-like bacillus spores requires a higher concentration and a longer time. At a concentration of 150 ppm, it can destroy the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) within 10 minutes. This product is not only used for skin disinfection but also for disinfection of metal medical devices, tableware, etc. At the disinfection concentration, it is usually red or amber in color and can be directly applied to the skin and meninges of surgical patients, or used for external rinsing in gynecology, obstetrics, and urology. When its concentration drops below 10 ppm, it turns white or light yellow and loses its bactericidal activity.
