Carboxymethyl Cellulose Sodium (CMC-Na) is a water-soluble anionic polymer obtained by chemically modifying natural cellulose (such as wood pulp and cotton linters). The carboxyl group (-CH2-COONa) introduced into its molecular chain gives it unique physical and chemical properties, making it a multifunctional, efficient and safe additive that plays an indispensable role in many industrial fields.
1. Food industry:
Thickener: Increase the viscosity of food and improve the taste. Commonly used in sauces, salad dressings, jams, jellies, puddings, soups, canned foods, instant noodle soups, etc.
Stabilizer/suspending agent: Prevent food ingredients from stratifying or settling and maintain uniformity. Suspend pulp or cocoa particles in juices, milk drinks, protein drinks, and chocolate milk; prevent ice crystal growth and whey precipitation in ice cream.
Water-holding agent/water-retaining agent: Improve the water holding capacity of food and prevent dehydration and drying. Used in baked foods (bread, cakes) to extend the shelf life and keep them soft; in meat products (such as sausages and hams), improve texture and reduce cooking losses.
Film former: forms a thin film on the surface of fruits to preserve freshness (such as coating preservation of citrus fruits).
Binder: used as a molding binder in pet food and feed.
Fat substitute/simulated taste: provides a smooth taste similar to fat in some low-fat foods.
2. Daily chemical products:
Toothpaste: one of the most important applications. As a binder/thickener, it gives the paste appropriate viscosity and consistency, making it easy to extrude, shape and stably adhere to the toothbrush; helps to suspend ingredients such as abrasives (such as calcium carbonate, silica) and spices to prevent stratification; provides the paste with gloss and smooth taste.
Shampoo, shower gel, facial cleanser: As a thickener/stabilizer, it adjusts the viscosity of the product, improves the spreadability and sensory properties during use; helps stabilize the emulsion system to prevent component separation.
Liquid detergent: As an anti-redeposition agent, its negatively charged long-chain molecules can be adsorbed on the surface of fabrics and dirt particles, increasing the electrostatic repulsion between dirt particles, preventing the washed dirt from being redeposited on clean fabrics, and improving the whiteness of the washing.
Skin cream, lotion: As a thickener/stabilizer/film former, it increases the viscosity, stabilizes the emulsified system, and forms a protective film on the skin.
Shaving cream: Provides lubrication and stable foam.
3. Oil drilling:
Drilling fluid additive: It is one of the key components of water-based drilling fluid.
Filtrate reducer: It forms a low-permeability thin filter cake on the well wall, significantly reducing the penetration of water in the drilling fluid into the formation, protecting the well wall stability and preventing drilling.
Viscosifier: It increases the viscosity of the drilling fluid and enhances its ability to carry cuttings (bringing rock fragments drilled by the drill bit out of the wellbore).
Lubricant: It improves the lubrication properties of the mud.
4. Textile printing and dyeing industry:
Sizing agent: used for warp sizing, forming a tough and smooth film on the surface of the yarn, improving the strength, wear resistance and smoothness of the yarn, and reducing breakage and friction during weaving.
Printing paste: used as a thickener to prepare printing paste, giving the paste the required viscosity and rheology, making the pattern outline clear and preventing bleeding.
Finishing agent: improves the feel and appearance of the fabric.
5. Papermaking industry:
Enhancing agent: added to pulp, through hydrogen bonding between fibers, improves the dry strength and wet strength of paper (especially for recycled paper).
Surface sizing agent: applied to the surface of paper to improve the surface strength, smoothness, printability, oil resistance and writing performance of the paper.
Retention and drainage aid: combined with other chemicals, helps fine fibers and fillers remain in the fiber network during paper sheet formation and improves water drainage.
6. Ceramic industry:
Binder: Used in ceramic blanks (clay) to improve green body strength, facilitate molding and handling, and reduce drying and cracking.
Glaze suspending agent/thickener: Make glaze components evenly suspended, prevent precipitation, adjust glaze slurry viscosity, and facilitate glazing operation.
7. Paints and varnishes:
Thickener/rheology modifier: Adjust the viscosity and rheological properties (such as thixotropy) of the paint, prevent pigment sedimentation during storage, improve construction performance (such as anti-splashing, anti-sagging), and improve film quality.
Water retaining agent: Slow down the evaporation rate of water in latex paint.
8. Construction industry:
Cement mortar/gypsum additive: As a water retaining agent, it reduces excessive water loss and improves workability and strength development; as a thickener, it improves construction performance (such as anti-sagging); improves adhesion to the substrate.
Putty powder: Improve water retention, construction performance and bonding strength.
Tile adhesive: Improve water retention, open time and adhesion.
9. Water treatment:
Flocculating agent: used for wastewater treatment, promoting the aggregation and sedimentation of suspended particles through adsorption and bridging.
