Iodized cesium is abbreviated as CsI. Inorganic halides such as CsI(Tl) are widely used as the scintillation medium for high-energy particle and ionizing radiation detectors. The vacuum-deposited CsI(Tl) film was first used for X-ray imaging in phototransformers. In advanced digital X-ray imaging, the CsI(Tl) scintillator film is widely applied for X-ray imaging due to its high scintillation efficiency for X-ray radiation, high spatial resolution, and good matching with the silicon-based readout array that is sensitive to spectra.
Cesium iodide crystals are commonly used as the scintillator material in electromagnetic energy meters in particle physics experiments. Cesium iodide can be used as a spectroscope in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrometers as a diffraction grating. Compared to the more commonly used potassium bromide diffraction grating, cesium iodide has a wider light transmission range and the wavelength range can extend to far-infrared. However, there is a problem. The optical cesium iodide crystals are very soft and have no cleavage, so it is very difficult to produce a flat polished surface. In addition, cesium iodide optical crystals must be stored in a dry container to prevent water from reacting with cesium iodide. A layer of germanium can be plated on the surface of cesium iodide to minimize the influence of moisture in the air when exchanging the spectrometer.
