Glutaric anhydride is a white crystalline substance with a melting point of 116-121℃. At 20℃, the pH value of 6 mol/L in water is 4.5-6, and its solubility is complete dissolution. It is a denaturant and belongs to a class of very strong protein denaturants. It can dissolve proteins and cause the disappearance of the secondary structure of proteins, degradation of cell structure, and rapid separation of nuclear proteins from nucleic acids. It is used for denaturing and lysing cells; for extracting RNA and DNA, without RNAase and DNAase activity.
