Diphosphorus pentoxide is also known as phosphoric anhydride. It is a phosphorus oxide formed when white phosphorus, yellow phosphorus or red phosphorus burns in dry air. At room temperature, it is a white soft powder or colorless monoclinic crystal. It is highly hygroscopic and has a melting point of 580-585℃. Its relative density is 2.39, and it sublimes at 347℃. Under pressure and heated to 563℃, the crystal transforms into an amorphous glassy state (melted). It is insoluble in acetone and ammonia water, but soluble in sulfuric acid. It is prone to absorb moisture in the air and has extremely strong dehydration properties. It can even dehydrate concentrated sulfuric acid to form sulfur trioxide, making it a powerful desiccant. It reacts vigorously with water, releasing heat and white smoke. Each mole of diphosphorus pentoxide releases 68 kilojoules of heat. Under normal circumstances, it reacts with cold water to form pyrophosphoric acid, and with hot water mainly forms orthophosphoric acid. Different pentavalent phosphorus-containing oxides are formed depending on the amount of water added, such as pyrophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid, and orthophosphoric acid, etc.

Purpose
Used as a desiccant, dehydrating agent, a purifier of sugar, and for the production of phosphoric acid, phosphorus compounds and aerosols; also used as a doping source for semiconductor silicon, a dehydrating and drying agent, an organic synthesis condensing agent and a surfactant, and also for the preparation of high-purity phosphoric acid.
It is used as a raw material for producing high-purity phosphoric acid, phosphates and phosphate esters, and is also used in the manufacture of pentoxide phosphorus sol胶 and aerosols dominated by H-type. It can be used as a drying agent for gases and liquids， and a dehydration agent for organic synthesis. It is an anti-static agent for synthetic fibers， and a refining agent for sugars. It is also used in the manufacture of optical glass， ultraviolet-transparent glass， heat-insulating glass， microcrystalline glass and opalescent glass， in order to increase the dispersion coefficient of the glass and its ability to transmit ultraviolet rays. It is also used to produce pharmaceuticals， pesticides， surfactants.
It is used as a semiconductor dopant and is a raw material for preparing high-purity phosphoric acid.

Non-flammable. However, it will react violently with water and organic substances such as wood, cotton or grass, releasing heat and causing combustion. Reaction with Water
Reacts with cold water, generating extremely toxic pyrophosphoric acid: P2O5 + H2O = 2HPO3
Reacts with hot water, generating non-toxic orthophosphoric acid: P2O5 + 3H2O = (heated) 2H3PO4, exothermic reaction, the phenomenon is not very intense.
Toxicity
The smoke of phosphorus pentoxide irritates the mucous membranes. It has a stimulating and burning effect on the skin (causing tissue dehydration). The maximum allowable concentration is 1mg/rn3. The production equipment and pipelines should be sealed and maintained with good ventilation. Production workers should wear labor protection equipment and wear a gas mask to prevent exposure to phosphorus pentoxide vapor and smoke. Pay attention to protecting the skin and avoid ingestion or contact with the eyes. If the skin is accidentally touched, immediately rinse with water.
