What is Polyisobutylene CAS 9003-27-4?
Polyisobutylene, due to its adjustable molecular weight, extreme environmental stability and biological safety, has become a core raw material for gum-based candies, sealing materials and lubricants. Its applications are expanding from traditional industries to biomedicine (microcapsule delivery) and environmental protection materials (degreasing agents).
Chemical nature
Molecular formula: (C₄H₈)ₙ, Molecular weight: 56.1n (varies with polymerization degree).
Structural characteristics: Saturated linear polymer, repeating unit is -CH₂-C(CH₃)₂-, no asymmetric carbon atoms, no double bonds in the main chain, and the side chain methyl groups are symmetrically distributed.
Physical properties
State: When molecular weight is less than 30,000, it is a colorless transparent viscous liquid; when greater than 30,000, it is a rubbery semi-solid or elastic solid.
Stability:
Heat-resistant (processing at 140 - 200℃), acid/base resistant, ozone/ultraviolet resistant, excellent electrical insulation (high volume resistivity).
Insoluble in polar solvents such as alcohols, ethers, and ketones, soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Density: 0.92 g/mL (25℃), Flash point: 86 - 95℃ (closed cup, fireproof required).

1. Food and Medicine
Gum base: Provides chewability and hydrophobicity (such as Dalin PB1300 used in chewing gum).
Food packaging: Mixed with paraffin to enhance the resistance to cracking in frozen packaging, used for cheese films, etc.
Pharmaceutical excipients: Microcapsule coating (such as naproxen microcapsules), cosmetic moisturizers (replacing squalane).
2. Industrial Materials
Sealing and Adhesion:
Vacuum glass sealant: Excellent weather resistance, low moisture permeability (usage ≤ 35%).
Pressure-sensitive adhesives/Hot melt adhesives: Used for automotive waterproof sealing, insulating tapes (mixed with butyl rubber).
Waterproofing projects:
Roof leak-proof sheets, tunnel lining waterproof layers (high tensile strength, weather resistance ≥ 10 years).
Cables and Electrical:
Insulation impregnating agent (ratio: bright oil 65% + PIB 35%), increases breakdown voltage.
3. Energy and Chemicals
Oil additives: Thickening, anti-shear (such as multi-grade internal combustion engine oil, accounting for 86% of domestic demand).
Polymer modification:
Improving the impact resistance of polyethylene, ultraviolet stability of polyolefins.
Environmental applications:
Drag reduction agent (fire hose energy saving), waste oil adsorption materials.

Food Contact Specifications (GB 4806.1):
Adhesive Usage: Maximum usage 35%, prohibited for food contact containing more than 50% oil or ethanol under direct contact conditions in freezing or refrigeration.
Migration Requirements: Total migration amount ≤ 10 mg/dm², no chromium(VI) detected (DL = 0.01 mg/kg).
Operational Risks:
Liquid PIB is flammable (flash point < 100℃), requires explosion-proof ventilation; during solid processing, need to prevent degradation with antioxidants (such as Irganox 1010). Environmental toxicity: Highly toxic to aquatic organisms. In case of leakage, it requires sand to absorb and must be disposed of as hazardous waste.
