Pyridoxine zinc, also known as pythi zinc, pythi ammonium zinc, or omadine zinc, is a "coordination complex" of zinc and pyridoxine sulfoxide that was synthesized and used as an external antifungal or antibacterial agent as early as the 1930s. At room temperature, it is a white to yellow crystalline powder. It has a slight characteristic odor. It is insoluble in water. Pyridoxine zinc forms insoluble precipitates with cationic and non-ionic surfactants, is unstable to light and oxidants, and is unstable to acids and bases at higher temperatures. It does not mix with EDTA, and non-ionic surfactants can partially deactivate it. In the presence of heavy metals, chelation or anti-chelation reactions occur, and these chelates are difficult to dissolve in water. EEC and GB7916—87 stipulate that the maximum allowable concentration of pyridoxine zinc in cosmetics is 0.5% by mass fraction, and it is only used in products that can be washed off after use. A usage concentration of 250-1000mg/kg (active ingredient) can be used for gels, creams, lotions, powders, and anti-dandruff shampoos, and is also used in deodorants and disinfectant products.
